Our History

The Young Artist Symphony Orchestra was organized in 1980 as the "Diablo Youth Orchestra" by parents, teachers, and community volenteers who were concerned about the absence of classical music opportunties in the Diablo Valley.

Jonathan Khuner led the Symphony until 1985 when H. T. Payne became conductor.

In 1990 the name was changed to the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and YASO began the tradition of international touring in alternate years. YASO has completed three European tours and in 1990 was awarded the Frances Comber Cup at the International Festival in Boumemouth, England.

In January 1996, Steven Accatino became Music Director and Conductor. In 1997 the orchestra got the chance to play at Carnegie Hall. YASO is now reaching for new and more challenging goals than ever before.
